Swiss army knife
Invented in the early 20th century by Karl Elsner, the Swiss army knife quickly became a staple in the Swiss military. The multi-purpose tool became popular with American troops during WWII, who attributed the title because they couldn’t pronounce the knife’s original name, “offiziersmesser.”
A standard Swiss army knife will usually include:
• Two blades (a main and a smaller one)
• Scissors
• Tweezers
• Flat-head screwdriver
• Toothpick
While the Swiss army knife has retained its basic form over the last hundred years, modern modifications have improved the stylish aspect of the tool. For example, it’s not rare to find blades with digital clocks, USB drives, or MP3 players embedded in them.
